Educational farm tour at Franklin Farms in Lexington, IL hosted by the Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy hosted an educational farm tour at Franklin Farms in Lexington, IL, inviting ISA staffers Jeff Hake and Liz Rupel, State Representative Sharon Chung, State Representative Regan Deering, IL The Illinois Environmental Council, Mclean County SWCD , ParkLands Foundation (Illinois), and National Farmers Union to learn how sustainable ag practices are reducing nutrient loss.
Farmer John Franklin and TNC highlighted several conservation features, including a prairie restoration project and two of three experimental wetlands. TNC’s 12 years of data show that the wetlands are reducing nitrogen runoff in some cases at 35% and up to 50%! As TNC scientist Dr. Maria Lemke noted, “Even the little itty-bitty wetland is making an impact.”
Wetlands naturally support biodiversity, store carbon, and regulate water flow by filtering pollutants, reducing floods, and releasing water during dry spells.
As Illinois faces increasing extreme weather—from heavy rains to dust storms—conservation practices like wetlands, cover crops, and buffer strips are more critical than ever. Yet, many farmers face barriers due to limited funding and technical assistance. Farm tours like this spotlight the value of in-field practices, importance of state and federal conservation programs and funding, and the vital role of conservation partners like Soil and Water Conservation Districts in protecting our soil, water, and climate.
